About the Center Child Neuroscience Division

The Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) was created in August 10, 1979 through Presidential Decree No. 1631. It was formerly named Lungsod ng Kabataan, a tertiary specialty hospital created to provide expert health care for children who are sick under the initial directorship of Dr. Fe del Mundo. In 1981, Dr. Lillian V. Lee became the 5th director of PCMC. And under her leadership, she added two essential and important departments, the Child Neuroscience Department and the Department of Perinatology designed to provide specialty care for children with neurologic diseases around the country including anticipatory care for children even before they are born.

Consequent to the establishment of the Department of Child Neurology and Department of Perinatology, was the creation of the Center for Developmental Intervention aimed for the rehabilitation and development of neurologically impaired children including the teaching and development of children with learning and behavioral disorders.
From its small and humble beginnings, the CNS division has expanded over the years and offered additional fellowship training programs:
1998
Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics

1992
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

2004
Neurosonology

2006
Epilepsy and Electroencephalography

It now houses under one roof a team of the brightest and highly passionate experts in the fields of Child Neurology, Neurosurgery, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics, Neuropsychology and Neurodiagnostics. It is also one of the most dynamic units of PCMC in terms of service, training and research.
To date, the Child Neuroscience Division of PCMC is the biggest and the most comprehensive multidisciplinary training center in the country. It boasts of its commitment to promote the neurological and mental health of children, through excellent training, socially responsive, comprehensive and interdisciplinary service, backed up by relevant researches. Furthermore, it has widened its reach throughout the nation by producing a total of 52 Child Neurologists, 15 Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, 20 Neurodevelopmental Pediatricians, and Fellows with additional subspecialties strategically placed geographically to strengthen and spread the mission, vision and values of the Center in the service of the Filipino children.

Services

The PCMC hospital has allotted a 20-bed capacity for the Neurology and Neurosurgery wards. The Out-Patient Clinics offer service consultations in General Neurology, Epilepsy, Intractable Epilepsy, Movement Disorders and Neurosurgical cases. The hospital caters to patients coming from all over the country – from Aparri to Jolo.

The Center continues to provide quality care and service to a huge number of children with varied neurological problems. It has shown a steady increase in the number of patients seen in the ward and at the out-patient department. In order to be efficient in delivering service, the Center has embarked on creating clinical pathways on certain diseases such as status epilepticus, Anti-NMDAR Encephalitis, febrile and afebrile seizures, acute motor weakness, depressed sensorium and Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Committed to the mission of becoming the center of excellence in Epilepsy, we educate and empower patients with epilepsy and their families. Likewise, the Center has held 40 Annual Epilepsy Camps for the past years.

Training Program

While the Child Neurology Fellowship training program stands by the prescribed requirements for child neurology fellowship, the trainees also rotate in Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Vice-Versa. The fellows in training rotate in adult neurology in accredited hospitals like the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, the St. Luke’s Medical Center, Quezon City and the East Avenue Medical Center. Weekly meetings include hospital conferences, child neurology conferences, the Thursday Child Neuroscience Staff Conferences, the Brain and Spine Conference and Neurosurgery conference.

What makes the fellowship program unique is the emphasis for the interdisciplinary approach in the management of children with neurological disorders. Close communication of all members of the neuroscience team as well as partnerships/ collaborations with the other pediatric subspecialties in the hospital is ensured towards the holistic care of children.

The Child Neuroscience Division offers a three-year fellowship program in Child Neurology and Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics and a two-year program in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. From its fellowship program it has produced 48 Child Neurologists, 15 child and adolescent psychiatrists, 20 neurodevelopmental pediatricians, 2 epileptologist- all successful in their respective areas of practice.

The training program continues to attract applicants keen to become child neurologists, neurodevelopment pediatricians and child psychiatrists.

PCMC Child Neurology: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

The PCMC- Child Neurology has initiated the following programs and services dating back to its initial establishment:
The Center for Developmental Intervention Foundation Inc. (CDIFI) ----a special education unit located within the hospital grounds. This unit provided for special education needs of the CNS patients primarily and also served as a training ground for students taking special education and clinical psychology. An eminent Doctor of Neuropsychology, Dr Lourdes Ledesma provided the leadership in the development of the special school.
Establishment of Neurosonology as a diagnostic and therapeutic armamentarium in the early 1990s. In 1994, the first postgraduate course and workshop in Pediatric Neurosonology was held at the PCMC graced by international experts particularly Dr Asma Q. Fischer from University Hospital and St Joseph’s Hospital Agusta, Georgia , Dr Albert Hoi- King Lam of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney , Dr Huei – Syong Wang Chang Gung Medical Center at Taipei and Dr Edward J. Truemper of Medical College of Georgia.
The Epilepsy Camp: Advocating for patients with Epilepsy, the PCMC CNS initiated the Epilepsy Camp which was first held in March 1993 with DOH Secretary Dr. Juan Flavier as the special guest. Since then, the epilepsy camp has been held yearly for the past 29 years and continues to move forward. In 2006, the Philippine League Against Epilepsy (PLAE) has partnered with the PCMC CNS in conducting National Epilepsy Camps.
The application and execution of the Interdisciplinary Team Approach in the care and management of children with neurological, neurosurgical, behavioral , neuropsychological and developmental concerns.
The Collaborative Care with other pediatric subspecialties –in the care of conditions such as cerebral palsy, cancer, high risk infants, spina bifida, and adolescent transition.
In the pipeline are more fellowship programs in Pediatric Neurosurgery, Movement Disorders and Pediatric Neurophysiology.
The construction of the Pediatric Brain Center, a 4-storey building is now underway. The Pediatric Brain Center will house all the outpatient services of the Child Neuroscience Division from patient care to neurodiagnostics and management. This will ensure that more children with neurological, developmental and behavioral conditions are given the best holistic care the center can provide.
