Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Program

The Section of Pediatric Nephrology fellowship program, recognized by the Philippine Pediatric Society was established last 1990. Since then, the two-year PSN and PNSP-accredited program has produced thirty-four graduates. The Section is continuously growing, gearing up for six fellowship plantilla positions, accepting lateral entry applicants and anticipating the addition of specialists in Pediatric Nephrology, Interventional Nephrology, and Transplant.
The clinical training is extensive and includes: a spectrum of patients seen from Neonate to Adolescent during inpatient consultative nephrology; out-patient longitudinal experience in CKD patients; multi-subspecialty exposures and many research opportunities. Apart from the vast renal disease exposure, skills in performing percutaneous kidney biopsies, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, urine microscopy interpretation are also developed.

The Fellows are assigned staggered six-months rotation in a Pediatric-dedicated Hemodialysis Unit under full guidance. Direct experience in:
Conventional hemodialysis
Prolonged Intermittent Renal Replacement Therapy
Hemoperfusion
Cannulating hemodialysis accesses
Fellows also undergo intensive Peritoneal Dialysis training thru workshops and hands-on experience in peritoneal dialysis exchanges, exit site care, PET and PD adequacy.

Fellows present at a weekly Nephrology Case Conference, multidisciplinary conferences with other subspecialties, monthly hemodialysis case discussion, peritoneal dialysis reporting, weekly didactic lectures with the training officer, transplant lecture hour, and a series of supplemental lectures in renal pathology, renal imaging and research, Recently, the Section has collaborated for a monthly case presentation with the Children’s Kidney Center in Singapore.
The Section is looking forward to offer continuous renal replacement therapy, point of care ultrasound training, and renal transplantation as the section aims to offer the trainees excellent learning opportunities in all facets of nephrology.
