Neonatology Fellowship Training Program

The Neonatology Fellowship Training Program of the Philippine Children’s Medical Center is a 3-year training program designed to integrate excellent clinical training in the care of high risk neonates and the comprehensive follow-up of NICU graduates, combined with a strong background in the academic field and clinical research, and endowed with administrative and managerial capabilities to handle NICU concerns and demands. The program is duly accredited by the Philippine Society of Newborn Medicine Inc.

Our trainees are under the supervision of board-certified Neonatologists who conduct teaching sessions such as bedside rounds, lectures, chart reviews and conferences.

The Neonatal ICU can accommodate up to twenty (20) level III high risk neonates. It is fully equipped with incubators, ventilators, and monitoring equipment ideal for the care of each high-risk newborn. Patients needing level II care are being managed at the newborn ward.

Groundwork for further collaboration with the different subspecialties has been made possible by the provision of state of the art equipment:
Preparations are in place for cardiac catheterization, PDA stenting, and open heart surgery
Infrastructure and manpower complement to facilitate increased admission of high risk pregnant women whose fetuses are assessed to have congenital malformations requiring immediate neonatal/neurologic/urologic/gynecologic/surgical intervention, eg. EXIT procedure for difficult airway.
High risk Infant follow up program to be enhanced by in-patient initial assessment of high risk infants by the Neurodevelopmental team
Acquisition of equipment for laser therapy and retinal imaging (RetCam) will advance early detection and intervention for ROP
Collaboration with Pediatric Pulmonology for Pulmonary rehabilitation/home care for Chronic lung disease
Early intervention/renal replacement therapy
Point of care ultrasound, echocardiography, bedside blood analysis and portable xray enhance patient assessment and intervention carried out by the fellows in charge under the supervision of subspecialty consultants (neonatologists, neurologists, cardiologists, radiologists).
Other than the subspecialty directions of patient care, research and training, the basic and indispensable care are given full attention: Early Essential Newborn Care (EENC), Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), breastfeeding, Care of the Small Baby (CSB). Fellows in training are at the helm of implementation of these essential programs and the continuing training of all hospital personnel.
